Sansui 5050 review
Purchased the Sansui 5050 from the original owner who was selling a Sansui G4500 ($120). When I arrived they asked me if I wanted the 5050 as well $50 more.... it was dusty and dirty but I took it.
I own a Sansui 8080 that I have invested in cleaning and tuning - and it’s become my main stereo. I figured if the 5050 was half as good it would be worth the time.
After cleaning and DeOxit of both, they both work perfectly (including all original bulbs...). What impressed me about the 5050 was the clear and deep bass thump, very very similar to the 8080. Wow this is Sansui has great depth and soundstage in a tiny package.
Short story - The G4500 cannot compete - nowhere near as good. Sound of the G 4500 is brighter, but thinner, lacks the feeling and style of the 5050 (and 8080)

Bought 1 in 1976 with paper route money. thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. Upgraded over the years, but still went back the 5050. I'm using it now as my main power source with a realistic equalizer, 3 Sony Jukeboxes and a pair of Cerwin-Vega AT-12s for increased volume and a pair of JBl L-56 for low level quality listening. Absolutely love it

Sweet sounding little receiver!
1976 the Golden Years of HiFi are ALMOST gone forever - more plastic inside than before, cheap vinyl wrap on cabinet. Still, decently build by today's standards. Here we're talking about a truly minimalistic design - 2 transistors in Phono, 2 in tone control section, 6 in power amp (1 of which is bias control, not directly in the signal path). Differential stage in the power amp; directly coupled output. IC's only in tuner section, tuner audio output stage is discrete (thanks for that!)
OK, what about the sound then? Sweet, sweet, sweet - a typical Sansui at its best! It is much easier and CHEAPER to build a weak but nice sounding amp than a big powerful one. If raw power is not everything for you, and you're not so picky for the look of it, this will play just fine!

Got one for nothing from the recycling facility locally. Very ugly, scuffed up and scarred from neglect and mistreatment (to say nothing of rough handling after disposal). Powered right up, all dial lights present, picks up AM 740 in Canada here in Illinois no sweat, and very quiet operations and excellent phono input stage. Will need DeOxit everywhere and to have fins of tuner's air capacitor cleaned out, of course. But still, this is classic Japanese manufacture and sound. You can be sure the 33 watts it's rated for are really all there and accounted for.

Using a trashed one from curb side recycling. No lights, dents etc. powers second zone in my house, just as a power amp. Good sounding, a little tube like presentation - good bass.

OK, so I rated the first 5050 I got from our local recycling depot with 4.5 stars. I have gotten another one of these from the same source...and this one was in even worse condition, incredibly. I think quite a few of these 5050s were sold in our area by the old LaSalle Electronics outlet that used to be in our city, long since closed sadly. Anyway, this 5050 had only one light working (the tuner indicator needle lamp, thankfully) and deep scuffs and dings throughout, plus about half the cheepo woodgrain vinyl was missing. I peeled the remainder of the vinyl off and put epoxy in the serious dings and dents, then sanded them flat and recovered the whole case in black contact paper. This actually worked beautifully, I am happy to say. I also bought new LED lamps and installed them, and did the usual DeOxit treatment and detail cleaned the front panel and knobs. I also added a new power cord because they always chop 'em off at the recycling warehouse. After all this TLC, the old 5050 is now my favorite set, and is sitting proudly atop the entertainment center. Quiet, cool idle and a deliciously warm and inviting sound, plus it has the ever important mono mode switch unlike so many modern receivers. This unit was a pleasure to service, and it's a pleasure to listen to too! Long live the Sansui 5050.
